UNITED STATES EERNMENT Belmon Memorandum Casper DeLoac Mr. Belmont DATEAugust 19, 1964 To 1 - Mr. Mohr Trotte 1 - Mr. DeLoach Tele.Ro FROM A Hol 1 - Mr. Evans 7 - Mr. Sullivan 1 - Mr. Belmont LOS ANGELES AND.SAN FRANCISCO I -Mr. Rosen DIVISIONS 1 - Mr. Malley RACIAL MATTERS 1 - Mr. McGowan I-Mr.Trent The San Francisco and Los Angeles Divisions were o August 18, l964, alerted to the fact that the thousands of teenagers gathering for the appearances of "The Beatles" in Los Angeles and San Francisco could be a perfect vehicle for riots if racial elements or organization, subversive or otherwise, would decide to capitalize on this vehicle. Los Angeles and .... San Francisco were instructed that in this connection they should very carefully determine whether any element or organization, either local or from the outside, might be present endeavoring to create a disturbance. SAC San Francisco has advised that "The Beatles" Time, August 18, l964. They were brought by limousine to an awaiting crowd estimated by the San Mateo Sheriff's Office as over 5,ooo. The crowd consisted mostly of teenagers and younger, some accompanied by mothers. Although conduct was generally orderly, several persons were injured, and arrests of at least eight persons were made by the Sheriff's Office for disorderly person, disturbing the peace, and molesting. San Francisco has advised that no racial or subversive overtones were observed in the crowd. ACTION: We will continue to be alert for elements which may endeavor to capitalize on the emotional pitch of crowds of teenagers in connection with this appearance tour in view of the potential of such a situation.
