Gazette and a search disclosed an item appearing in April, 1965, relating to an episode in which CuLvER was involved in a scuifle with the Washington police on Friday night, 4/?/65. The article in part quoted a statement issued on behalf of CULveR which disclosed he had spent the evening in the company. of a constituent and after dropping him off at his hotel he called a taxi and gave the driver his home address in Chevy. Chase, Maryland. He dozed off in the back seat for the drive. home, which normally takes about thirty minutes. The next. thing he knew he was being roughly pulled out of the taxi. and manhandled by several men in civilian clothes who he later!4. learned were plainclothes detectives. Upon being so abruptly awakened he instinctively reacted to resist what appeared to be a criminal attack. A briei scuifle ensued and he then pro-- ceeded without opportunity for explanation. He was taken to. the Eighth Precinct Station House in Washington, where he identified himself as a Congressman.
