The U. S. Congressman from Iowa admitted on 4/9/65
scuffling with five 8th Precinct policemen who pulled him
sound asleep from a cab a week before..
Representative JOHN C. CULVER, 32, Democrat of
Iowa, called reparters to his office and explained that on
the prior Friday night with several constituents he went
to several places, had drinks and fell asleep while en route to.
His Chevy Chase home..
The cab driver not being able to find the address
and not being able to rouse the fare drove to Precinct #8.
The Desk Clerk and four precinct detectives pulled him from
the cab. Awakened, he felt he was being attacked by men.

the "Evening Star" Newspaper datelined 4/10/65, entitled,
"Congressman Describes Scuffle With Police." The article
indicated that the following events came to light a week
after the episode occurred. Congressman CuLveR of Iowa
stated he had been to dinner at the LeBistro Restaurant with
a group of constituents and had taken a cab afterwards to
his Chevy Chase home. While en route the Congressman stated
he apparently dosed off..
The driver of the taxicab drove to the 8th Precinct,.
MPD, and told Sergeant HAROLD D. BOWERS about his sleeping.

According to the article, Sergeant BoweRs tugged at
CULvER but could not wake him and plainclothes privates
ROBERT G. DENNELL and DOUGLAS C. TAYLOR came out to assist
Sergeant BowERs. CULVER stated "My first impression was
that I was being attacked,"said cuLvER, "I resisted. "There
is no question about it. 'It was an instinctive reaction.".
It took five police officers to subdue him. The article.
stated that cuLveR's identity was not discovered by the police.
until after they had entered his name in the arrest book.
