GENERAL INVESTIGATIVE DIVISTON
Attached teletype reports that a group
of approximately 30 people professing to be
American Indians who formerly occupied
Alcatraz Island appeared at the San Francisco
Office accompanied by their attorneys on.
9/14/7l. A spokesman for the group advised
they appeared to express support for three
subjects, also Indians, who are awaiting
trial on Possession of Stolen Government
Property charge. An attorney in the group
produced 12 signatures of Indians who
claimed to have been present at a meeting
in early June, l97l, on Alcatraz and voted
in favor of selling the copper on the

Island to help support their qroup.

Agents in San Francisco for Possession of
Stolen Government Property. The subjects
sold approximately 1600 pounds of Government
copper wire valued at $6oo to a local
San Francisco metal dealer. The copper was
obtained from cable lines at Alcatraz Island
which at the time had been occupied by
American Indians for the previous nine months.
U. S. Marshals invaded Alcatraz Island on
6/ll/7l, and evicted the remaining Indians.
Facts pertaining to the 9/14/71,
demonstration were discussed with an
Assistant U. S. Attorney, San Francisco, who
requested an investigative report regardinc
the incident before a prosecutive opinion
would be rendered. Aggressive investigativ
action is being conducted by our San Franciscc
Office.
