LAMO is labeled in the media as the "homeless hacker". He considers himself a "white hat hacker". Investigation by the New York Office has revealed that LAMO is a "black hat hacker", an individual who breaks into a computer system with the purpose of inflicting damage or stealing data. Each time LAMO hacks a major corporation, he first alerts friends in the media. The friends in the media then contact the victim company and ask for comment for their story. This is first notification the victim company receives that their network security has been breached. In September 2001, LAMO hacked rapbot and, rewrote the text of a YAHOO! News article. LAMO gained access through the portal's web-based production tools and modified a news story about DMITRY SKLYAROV, a Russian computer programmer facing pé —5 federal criminal charges. LAMO used a free internet connection at KINKOS to commit the hack. YAHOO! was informed of the breach D7C —5 after being contacted b who was contacted by LAMO. was convicted in 1990's by the FBI for committing unauthorized computer intrusions. ool, LAMO -cgntacted the reporter,[ _| bo -2, -5 o inform him that he had gained b7C -2, -5S unauthorized access into a MECR ustomer service database. LAMO had gained access to MICRQSOFT's database is September 2001 but choose not to disclose his access until October 2001. LAMO utilized a vulnerability in MICROSOFT's network that allowed an unpublished Internet Protocol (IP) address to be entered into a web browser. The IP address provided access to records of the individuals who had purchased products and services from MICROSOFT. The first notification of this unauthorized intrusion was conducted by[___|]who contacted MICROSOFT asking them for a comment to his story he was writing regarding the hack. MICROSOFT confirmed the hack and described the incident as "an error that led to a breach of privacy, against our privacy policy". In December 2001, LAMQ contacted the reporter,[___—id b6 -5 0 Anform him that he had ‘gained BIC —5 unauthorized access into MC RLDCOM's internal network. LAMO gained access to WORLDCOM'’s internal network in October 2001 but ~ . choose not to disclose his access until December 2001.
