Director RE: BASQUE ORGANIZATION September 10, 1945 . ‘ Both representatives stated that in the event the services of their organization are terminated, the organization will be glad to perform any possible service in the fu e for this Office for which they will not receive compensation. It is desired to point out as reflected in reference , letters, that since January, 1944, the work of the Basque Intelli- gence Service has been unsatisfactory. In the hope that by close supervision and assistance, the efforts of the Basques could be erystalized, continued efforts were made and continue to be made to correct the failings of the Basque Intelligence Organization. Constant suggestions have been made by this Office, persuasion methods used, and various conferences held in an effort to coordinate the efforts of and instill a desire in the various members of the Basque Group to perform the necessary work. However, when leads were given to the Basque Organization, no desire to cover the leads has been evident and the members thereof have been most dilatory __ in furnishing the information desired, It 1s therefore felt by _s this Office that the Bureau coverage in Venezuela will not be pre- judiced in ayy, manner by the discontinuance of the services of the Basque Group. \ N “ . + : ‘ 3 : This information is being furnished to the Bureau to that it may be cognizant of the present developments concerning the Basque Intelligence Organization in Venezuela and the Bureau will be currently advised as to any steps taken concerning this Group.
