This involves getting pecple into really economic action through labor unions cr other working class organizations which build their base around the point of production rather than all their people live in a community of this kind righ’ here. Of course, one reason that the left has ignored the working class is that many of the established unicns in America have a very bad reputation of seljing cut the stricgle of the workers. Even though this is true, we believe that the petential for working class __ (unintelligible) is very great, both in new unions which can be-cerganized on 3crewhat Gifferent assumprions than old unions. Essentially this car be particularly easily done in non-unionized areas such os the Szuth. It seems to me that it would be possible to, you know, hiild unions here starting from a non-union situation where + Lon could be created which would not be racist and would no b hureancratic as some nerthern unions are. But the potential for change within existing union structures is alse great when the rark ard files can be crganized to deal with this bureaucracy and s2ll-ovt pclicy in established unicns. Students now are trying te gain experience in contact with working people through programs such as ACT and also through taking part in factory experiences in the summer, MARTHA, however, repre ‘ented a group cf students from this area who worked in Charlotte this past summer. I was working for a while in a friend's shep, and MARTHA was in (unintelligible) Nerth Carolina Foods. Later on she will relate some of her observations that. she gained over the summer. I Wanted to relate a few more gereral things first. The national SDS, there was a ict of publicity in magazines like Time and Newsweek, and probably even TV Guide about SDS was going to come in and, you know, rack up all these factorjes and they were going to, you know, take over the factory like they took over the buildings atColumbia, and a1] this kind of thing. The program that we were in, I just want to tell you, the program that we were in was net connected with any national organization out of the SDS or any other national grup.
