Upon learning of the Director's “absence, the Senator asked to speak with me. I told him that unfortunately the Director was in travel status and that I woul be talking with him this afternoon and would be glad to relay any message. pe i D é The Senator was véry fxtondly and talked for approximately 15-20 minut: He stated he was sorely troubled about the Birmingham case. He stated that he hoped the FBI would solve this matter and bring the guilty individuals to task. The Senator specifically asked if we were looking into all angles. Iasked him what he meant. jp’ He stated there is a possibility, of course, that Negroes might have perpetrated this incident in order to keep emtions at a fever pitch. He added, of course, there is always a possibility that the communists had perpetrated the bombing. I told the Senator the Director had instructed nothing be overlooked in our investigation of this matter. . s Senator Russeli told me he sincerely hoped that the Attorney General or the President would not attempt to suppress evidence in this case. He said he knew that Mr. Hoover would never stand for such an act, however, the possibility always existed that if the perpetrators of the Birmingham incident proved to be individuals whose guilt might embarrass the Administration, there could possibly be an attempt to suppress evidence or play down the guilt of these individuals. I told Senator Russel. that the Director would never be a party to such an incident, that as a matter of fact, if any Administration attempted to use the FBI in this manner ae they would certainly regret it.
