Dewsy with State Agent William arthur, of the Iown Bureau of Investigation, Des Moines, lows, interviewed Ed Penn, near Dexter, who advised that on Sunday afternoon, July 23, 1933, he had gone to the Johnson and Hicks woods a short distence north of his property to pick berries, and efter driving into the woods, came toa fence and could g° no furthers Here he noticed whore a party had been camping and left their fire burning, and upon examining the fire he found som old bloody clothes, cushions and rubber mts burminge On the ground nearby were several bloody bandages. He immediately returned home, which wis around 2:00 or 3:00 P.M. Sunday afternoon. A short time later he noticed two new Ford Sedans stop at the school house on the corner, near his farm, He went down to this corner through his cornfield to see what these parties were doing, ‘They evidently spied him, as they drove down his lane, and then turned eround end came backs Mre Penn stated that he has no phone and he did not like to leave his family alone at the farm, so waited until his hired man, Henry Ney, came home in the early evening, when they both went dow through the woods to make sure that the two cars were there before calling the officerse They spotted the cars, but Penn and Ney became separated, and Penn returned to his home. Ney went to a neighbor, Carlton Johnson, and told him, and he in turn called the Town Marshal, John Ee Love, at Dexter, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs Carlton Johnson, both Jre and Sr.e, were interviewed and reported the visit of Ney, and verified the report that they called kr. Love, and after doing so, left the farm snd came to town as they were afraid something might happen as their house adjoins the woods. Mr. John Love, Town Marshall, Dexter, lown, advised that he operates e shoe store in town and that on Fridey July #1, 1933, Clyde Barrow Came into his store and tried on @ pair of shoes. Mre Love stated that he wears hie badge during the dey pinned to his shirt inside the pocket and when he bends over the badge is noticeable. He saw his customer observe this badge and to then become uneasy. He took the shoes without having them wrapped, and hurriedly left the stores Mr. Love again observed this man with another man and a girl in a Ford V~8 Sedan in town on Saturdsy night July 22nd. On Sunday he received @ report that this seme man came in to Bloom's Cafe twice on Saturdey end again on Sunday and ordered five meals which he took with him from the Gafe. Later Sunday evening he received the report from the Johnsons relative to the bloody Clothings and he then called Sheriff Clint A, Knee at Adel and advised hims Mre Enee came to Dexter to investigate, and then decided to call the State: Bureau of Investigation.
