During wy conversation with Burgess I recall specifically that he intro- @uoed himself as a British diplomat. We had a casual conversation with! reference to the various differences in the roads of the United States and Great Britain and to the merits of the American and British motor vehicles fhe conversation then turned to Comminism. I am wocertain as to the exact manner in which the conversation began, but , at any rate, Burgess commented that if the United States and Great Britain did not watch themselves and watch the people in high offices that "We would all be run by Conmunists*. The conversation then turned to the Korean situation and Burgess asked me . what I thought about the Norean war. I told him that the A-bomb should be used. Burgess replied by saying that it should not be used because other countries have the A-bomb too and plans for just as effective bombs as ours. I told Burgess that the Korean war was « fight for freedom and that freedom was always worth fighting for. He replied by saying, "I'21 never fight for freedou again; theytil have to kill me before I go back in service.* Burgess said that he had fought for freedom once in the last war and that after it had been achieved, the United Nations had allowed another war to start in Korea. Then the United States and the United Nations had gone inte thie war when they had no reason to do #0. Burgess told me that he planned to go back to Great Britain on vacation an the fall of 1951.
