Service. Burgess said he could learn and do so many interesting things © -
in the U.S.S.R. He did not specifically say what he meant by interesting :
things, but from the conversation I felt that he had a general interest in
Russia and its government. In my opinion, Burgess felt sympathetic towards
the Soviet Union. I base this on his references to Korea and his interest
in Russian affairs as well as his statement that he could learn and do
many interesting things h the U.S.S.R. I cannot recall any other specific
statements relative to Russia.
After riding with Burgess for some time I became alarmed and thought pos-
sibly that Burgess might not be a diplomat, but might be a spy. I based
this on the fact that Burgess asked me many quertions relative to who I
thought would win the war in Korea, what branch of service I had been in
during the last war, and questions es to the number of men now in the
United States Naval service and in the United States Air Porce. To these
questions I replied that I had no way of knowing the number of men 80
maintained in these branches of service. Burgess was also interested
4n the American Jet fighter and in as much as I had been in the Air Force,
he asked me severs] questions relative to the performance of this fighter.
I told him that the American jets, as a group, were probably the best. in
the world and gave good performance with a minimm of service problens.
I felt so strongly that Burgess was probably a spy that J asked an officer
of the Virginia State Police soon after my arrest if Burgess actually was
