Nobody cares much what Burgess and Maclean are doing now. Nobody cares, in fact, whether they are alive, dead, happy « miserable. They can rot in the country which their treachery took therm, But there are questions lefr in their wake at jome here which demand immediate answers: } What is going on in our Foreign Office? 2 What has been going on for years that it could become a secure hide-out for traitors? Who are the guilty men who have been lying tieic heads off in attempts to retect, not Burgess and Maclean, but . ysterious Somebody Else? How are we to get answers te these que: tions? This newspaper believes that fhe only way is. for the Government to set up a Royal Commission into the workings of the Foreign Office. That impartial examination would produce the truth, however unpalatable it might be- it would also unmask the men who are guilty in this affair—men who ought to be sacked and barred from any further service under the Crown, We believe we are expressing the demaad of the public generally in calling for this investigation. For there are harsh facts to be faced.
