Unless and until the Friends Service Committce so does, I must criticise
and oppose it, And if it represents the avowed and official and centrai policy cand
activity of the Socicty of Friends, I shall have to withéraw from the Society of
Friends, because in my humble opinion such policy and activity is allegiance not
to Christ but to the Lord of This ‘World whose temptation Jesus scorn
Unless and untill the Service Committee becomes the outspoken critic
regimes that consider truth only the most convenient lie and fracd and for ce
the true agencies of achieving the good life for all, I can only oppose andd
myself fromthe Service Committee. If the Service Committee believes in
right of aconcerned minority even (which I believe is a concerned majority), it
must immediately cease its present emphasis and activity. I humbly and respect-
fully ask it to consider this. *
STATEMENT by DWIGHT W. MICHENER
The time seems appropriate to consider some of the long-run trends in
Service Committee activities, Four observations may be made.
1. There has been 2 ehift in the type of organization
In its early years, Service Committee organization was informal and fl
In all cases, the working group was shaped to fit the particular job. The
work was done largely on a volunteer basis by the sincere Friend himse!,
by his own hands. Time was taken off from his regular business, to
which he would soon be returning.
Now, the A.F,.S.C. is a large organization, with some 200-300 permanent,
salaricd employees, most of whom have lost contact with their oris
fields of productive enterprise, For the most part, those who do this
service derive a living by so doing, (In this connectio
thet many Quakers are opposed to "“hireling ministers;" yet
ware now using largely "hireling" personnel, many of them non-F
to do this work for us.}
Of course, with a large and permanent staff, grist must be found for
Organization mill, It seems that there is competition with other agencies
