. The May-15, 1967, edition of the San Antonio ~
Express, a daily newspaper published in San Mntonio, Texas,
Carriéggan article which states that Henry Munoz, Ure,
Director of the Equal Opportunity Department of the Texas
AFL-CIO and member of the Texas Advisory Committee to the
United States Commission on Civil Rights, had asked that
that committee convene to investigate alleged violations of
the civil rights of striking Starr County, Texas farm
workers by Texas Rangers.
on May 18, 1967, GilbertX\Padilla, Vice-President,
United Farm Workers Organizing Cemmattee (UFWOC), Rio Grande
City, Texas, advised that that mornihg while picketing at
Trophy Farms, Rio Grande City, 22 members of the UFWOIC had
been arrested by Texas Rangers and charged with picketing
within 50 feet of Trophy Farms and within 50 feet of each
other, Complaints were filed against the pickets before
a local Justice of the Peace and bond had been set at
$100.00 each. Arrangements for pond were being made by
Attorney for the UFWO@, James B.\McKeithan, Padilla was
considering filing charges locally against the Rangers
for “pushing" pickets.
On May 18, 1967, , rr 2: Rangers,
Rio Grande City, stated he and o r ngers had made the
above arrests on the charge as stated, this beings a viola-
tion of Texas law. He said one of those arrested was
Demingo Arredondo, President of the UFWOC Chapter at Rio
Srande City.
