I know I will bo severely criticizod by the intorventionistes in America when I say we should ngt cpier a war unless we have a reasonable chance of win- ning. That, they will}Cigin, ie far too mterialistic a viewpoint. They will advance again the same arguments that were used to persuade France to declare war againet Germany in 1939. But I do not believe that our American ideale, and our way of life, will gain through an unsuccessful war. And I know that the United States is ip not epared to wage war, in Europe 2 successfully at this times Og We are no better propared today than France was when the interventionists in Europe pereunded her to attack the Siegfried Line. I have said before, and I will say again, that I believe it will be « tragedy to the entire world if the British Empire collapses.
