Gene Guerrero, fourding chairman of the Southern Student Organizing Committee,
will refuse induction into the drxy tecey at tro U.S. Amid Forces incuction cen-
ter et 665 Tonce De Leon avenues Guerrero has epplied for and been dearicd @ con-
scientious chjector classification. A1855 ercluate of Emory University, he wes
active in the non-violent sit-in movement in 1963 end 1954 which eventually led
to the passage of the Civil Rights Act. Guerrero was instrumental in forming
the Southern Student Crgonising Cocnittee, a Southiwide student organization mili-
antly pro-civil rights ard anti-Vietnon war.
Guerrero says in a statement to be released at the irduction center, "I believe
thet 2 person Should attempt to match his actions with his beliefs. Because of
ny belief s, I must refuse induction today. I believe that war is wrong ard I
cannot participate in war. I believe that the war in Vietnam is immoral, iliegel,
and contrary to the interests of the American people. Even if I were not a con
scientious objector, I would hope that I would be able to refuse induction to-
day because of the immorality of the war in Vietnam."
A coalition of £tlanta pacifist and anti-war groups are protesting Guerrero's
induction es part of a nationwide "stop the draft" week. . among the sponsors of
the demonstration are the following groups: the Southern Student Organizing Com-
mittee, Atlanta Veterans for Peace, Atlanta Workshop in Nonviolence, Atlanta
Young Socialist slliance, Atlantans for Peace, American Friends Service Committee,
Emory Comunity Peace Union, Georgia State Committee on Social Issues.
Tom Gardner, chairman of the Southern Student Organizing Committee, headquartered
din Nashville, said, "We can no longer allow the politicians in Vashington to
draft young Southern men to fight in their idiotic, immoral, and imperialistic
