TIAL RE: UNITED FARM WORKERS, DEMONSTRATION AT FORT A LEWIS, WASHINGTON JANUARY 14, 1971 INFORMATION CONCERNING On January 13, 1971, a source reported the United Farm Workers (UFW) have scheduled a demonstration at Fort Lewis, Washington, on January 14, 1971, Interested persons were to meet at the Lucky Food Store in Southcenter, the University YMCA near the University of Washington, both Seattle, or at Tacoma, Washington, and proceed to Fort Lewis. The source said the demonstration is a continuation of a program to protest the sale or use of lettuce picked by persons other than members of the UFW. The UFW has been attempting to organize farm laborers and to get a better wage for them. No violence in connection with the demonstration was proposed and no violence had been experienced in previous demonstrations against various food store chains in n past. +h ran r—4 ant else £GLE LG On January 15, 1971, the “Seattle Post-Intelligencer," a daily newspaper published at Seattle, Washington, reported approximately 60 members of the UFW were turned back by military police at Fort Lewis when they attempted to demonstrate against “scab lettuce” on that Army base the previous day.
