Cinque either has children of his own or is close to someone who does. He
is clearly black in his middle to late twenties. He has probably spent time
in jail or been involved with the Courts and the law as evidenced by his
identification with the aggressor - the Courts. He is poor and is probably:
not part of any University radical group. He is distinctly middle-class in
outlook and has an overly highly developed sense of morality and conscience.
He respects the powerful, family and the successful, above all else he seeks
absolution for his acts, understanding of his struggle with himself and
help in knowing who he is. He is painfully incapable of decisive action,
easily lead and docile. The oppression against which he chafes is the
oppressiveness of his own guilt feelings, his inability to assert himself
against the demands of others and what he feels to be his lack of personal
control over his own life.
He and his group are pseudo-innocents in the sense of using idealistic,
unrealistic conceptions of the cosmos. The tern "people" ranks among the
highest occurring words in his rambling diatribe. It is used projectively
to rationalize and displace his own personal failings onto others. However,
like the syntactical function words {e.g., the, that, etc.) among which it
ranks, this defense mechanism has lost most of its effectiveness and meaning.
The defense could be utterly shattered tf his projections were to be dis- |
avowed by one of those onto whom he seeks to displace his guilt.
There is an underlying strain of magic in the communique in the form of
misapprehensions of what is real, the nature of power and particularly in
the form of a numerological occultism. There is a conflict between the
"even", the just, and the "odd", the enemy. Al] references to the “Hearst
