SLA COMMUNICATION OF FEBI RY 19 @ @ Analyses of the text of the most recent taped communication from the SLA on the part of its spokesman, Field Marshall Cinque, indicates the following general conclusions: The primary problem evidenced by the communication patterns of Cinque centers around difficulties with wil] and decision. Cinque manifests unconscious needs for significance, power and acceptance. _His communication patterns, however, are in the nature of requests. He is tentative and uncertain, introspective and insecurg. He expects to fail. He is guilt ridden and finds security in his or§ani zation displacing respon- sibility to the “oppressors” or "The Court” and “his people". He sees himself as worthless and seeks to expiate his sin through acceptance from the powerful or by the dillution of rationalization and projected guilt. He is deferential and self-deprecating. All of Cinque's references to Hearst as a person use the title Mr. By contrast, al] references to Hearst as the enemy use symbolic abstractions such as Empire or Foundation. This dichotomy suggests that Hearst continue to emphasize his personal roles as a father and as a person rather than his corporate connections. Cinque seeks to mitigate the personal nature of his criminal act by rationalizing his be- havior as directed against an impersonal corporate enemy. Personalization of that enemy will add to his guilt and prevent him from carrying out his threats. References to his captive speak of her needs and wishes. She is veiwed by Cinque as an innocent and an individual. Such reactions are very _ encouraging, for according to my analysis, her individuality as a loved daughter is her protection from harm. The key to at least Cinque's inotiva- tions is an appeal] to the over-developed conscience of Cinque and the Hearst's personal plight which is not unlike the repressions Cinque himself feels. As a romantic, Cinque is particularly vulnerable to idealized pleas for sympathy and understanding.
