meets Bates to Gebhar digyiemorandum RE: HEARNAP @ rounds of .223 caliber Federal brand soft point ammunition. The Agent handling a scent dog was pinned down by automatic gunfire emanating from 1466 East 54th Street. The Agent positioned himself behind a tree approximately 30 feet from the above residence and returned fire, expending. 5 rounds of2.38 caliber Winchester-Western ammunition from his service revolver at the side window from which the gunfire was coming, see attachment B. Also attached are FBI photographs taken 7/28/74 of the dwelling at 1445 East 54th Street which housed the FBI SWAT Team during the shooting incident as well as selected LAPD photographs taken 5/18/74 of other Qwellings revealing numerous bullet holes — caused by gunfire coming from the SLA pad. At approximately 6:30 pm, a fire was observed burning within the residence at 1466 East 54th Street. From that time, firing by the FBI SWAT Team was discontinued. The FBI expended a total of 69 rounds from the various weapons set forth during the approximated 30-minute period Agents were under direct fire in the SLA shoot-out. At approximately 6:45 pm, a Negro female ran from the residence. The fire completely destroyed the building and the LAPD secured their SWAT Teams at approximately 6:55 pm. IN THE EVENT ANY OR ALL OF THE ABOVE IS DISSEMINATED, THE INFORMATION SHOULD BE EXTRACTED FROM THIS MEMORANDUM AND SET FORTH IN LETTERHEAD FORM WHICH HAS AFFIXED APPROPRIATE IDENTIFICATION AND PROPERTY CAVEATS. OBSERVATIONS: 4 The above information was obtained from official reports of the FBI and LAPD. All FBI Agents who had participated in this incident have duly recorded their observations. As of 8/12/74, there have been no civil suits filed against the FBI, LAPD or any of its officers, or the. city of Los Angeles, California, regarding this matter. If consideration is given to disseminating the above information, the Los Angeles authorities cited above should be recontacted to insure the FBI does not release a statement in conflict with the proceedings of a civil action.
