There are to be no extensions of time concerning the filing
of briefs. On July 18, 1974, the USCA will hear oral argu-

AUSA VARCE advised that a collateral issue had
arisen. On June 19, 1974, U. S. District Court Judge HAUK
had issved a "gag order’? that neither LEWIS, his attorneys
or the Government was Lo aiscuss this matter with the press.
In further iinpleanentatien of this order, Judge HAUK had
directcd Warden JACK WISH, Pederal Correctional Institution ‘
(FGL), Terminal island, Califomia, that LINTS could not
have access to the telephone and uncensored nail was to be
restricted. On his om initiative, Warden WISE had ordered
that LEWIS could not heave press interviews on a specific —
basis, this being in compisence with o recent Supreme Court
ruling. °
On Junc 26, 1974, LEWIS filed a civil suit. against
Jude WAUK and Worden @1SE to Lift the gag arder. On
June 26, 1974, USCA Ritanee HUFSTEDTER had arauted a stay on
the pag, oxdcer util July §, 1974, with the result that
LEWIS is atkowed telephone use md ase of uncensored mail,
AUSA VANGT: advised that the U. S. Attorney's
Warden WISE in this civil suit. She Department of Justice
has not yet advised as to whether or not the U. S. Attorney
in Los Angeles will defend Judge NAUK in this civil suit.
AUSA VANCE said that it has not yet been decided as to whether
or not to support the gos order, and it is presently unknown
when an answer will be filed with regurd to the civil suit
vs. Judse HAUK and Warden WISE. This issue may be decided
by the USCA on July 18, 1974, contemporaneously with the other
issucs. However, the U. Ss, Attorney at Los Angeles would
prefer to segragate the issues, and have a separate hearing
on the gag order.
On Jely 5, 1974, AUSA VANCE advised that on La
July 4, 1974, Associate Justice WILLLAM 0. \WOUGLAS issued >~
an order directing the release of WILL LEWLAQon bail, a
pending, results of his appeal to the Ninth Chycult Court
of-Appeals. The order was served on the U. S. Bureau of
