That ig why they enjoy such universally high estoem in every section of the United States. For 160 years the Scandinavians have not had placed upon them the same responsibility for world leadership as have England, France, Russia, and the United States. They have avoided large military exponditures, avoided the danger of throwe ing their weight around in power politics. They have perfected their internal economy. They have specialized ithose exports and imports which should best raise their standards of living. They have evolved the theory of mixed economy. They realize that they are still subject to serious difficulties resulting from de« ressions in the United States and misunderstanding between the reat Powerse Scandinavia more than any other par of the world except possibly Now Zealand and Australia, has lowered illiteracy, dnereased longovity and taken care of fundamental economic rights. Methods have somotimes been socialistic, shown greater concern for the man at the bottom of the pile than for the wan at the top, some tines taxed private property so heavily as to atifle private atlvee There will never be full peace in the world until Scandin- avians play a highly progressive role in serving as moderators potween the Germanie peoples of northern Europe, tha Slavs and the AngloeSaxons. You are concerned with the danger of Russia expanding, but you are equally concorned with the danger of a fear-doninated United States abandoning the prineiplos of world cooperation and helping to create a situation which would result in a war in which Seandinavia might sorve as one of the first battlegrounds. One gentleman sald todey that, he scarcely knew whether he preferred Scandinavia occupied by Russia and lioerated by the United States, or occupied by the United States and libere ated by Russias In any event he would probably find himself in the resistance movement.
