Thie school wee attended by 20 children representing 17 families
in the community and was conducted in the nature of a kindergarten.
GIRLS CLUB
. Fourteen girls of the community met once a week
at the Nursery School cabin under the leadership of Miss PAYNE.
The purpose of this group was to bring together the young giris
of the community, helping them to learn to work and play together
and bringing them into a closer relationship to the commmity end
. the Folk School,
SUMMERFIELD COOPERATIVE
The Summerfield Cooperative held meetings every
week throughout the year in the homes of the seven members.
Educetionel prormrems were ea part of all meetings. Rurmere sales
were held and sewing was done.
CRAFTS
Under the direction of Miss MARIANSTENZEL the pro-
Uren. of cretts has been expended, Classes were held in wood carving
pottery, drawing, dresem-king, children's classes, cley modeling,
enc shedowcreph. At a Christmas party 62 children attended and
receivea gifte from MYLES HORTON,
TRAVELING LIBRARY
A treveling librery in the county was started in
the beginning of the year by MARY LAWRANCE., A mimeogrephed news
bulletin containing an original cartoon and lebor serial, "Johnnie
Forkmen", and diecuecions of issues of special interest to miners
were on this program, A total of 728 books were circulated, of
which 343 were for children, 148 for adoleecents, 212 for adults,
and 25 of which were labor books. The school also conducted clacses
in instruction in Sacred Harp songs, equare dancing, and fiddling.
During the cummer HARRY LASKER orgenized a study
reoon at Larcer, Tennessee, which met on Thursday nights for two
months et the homes of DOLPH fase Y and GLORGE/SOKE,* Discucsions
were conducted on social endlegisiative problems which included
poll tex, Wacner Act, focinl security, ¥rge end Hour Lew, and the
preposed tax bill.
