Mr. Hoover asked Mr. Quinn to eheck over the facts in thia matter to ascertain definitely if the original request had come from the State. Bureau, , With reference to the Sherer case, Mr. Quinn advised Mr. Hoover - that the memorandum on this case was allprepared, Mr. Hoover inquired if any reference had been found to the letter which Shexrer claims put him on the spot by the Bureau, and Mr. Quinn advised him that no reference had been found to this letter. Mr. Hoover stated thet the papers were carrying the story containing a statement from Shearer in which he clains that a letter was introduced by the Department of Justice, written by some Ian who claimed that Shemrer had threatened this man's life, and he, Mr. Hoover, would like to have Mr. Quinn check on this. With reference to Mr. Stanley's call that an Agent confer with Mr. Garnett Monday morning, Mr. Hoover instructed Mr. Quinn to have an Agent see Mr. Garnett and to be sure that we do not get any of the gambling cases, but that if it had anything to do with the Mumitions Investigation, we would probably have to go into it. Mr. Quinn advised Mr. Hoover that Mr. Garnett preferably wanted Agent Loebl, whersupon Mr. Hoover stated that Mr. Garnett could not have Agent Loebl, and that we would send someones else. Mr. Hoover instructed Mr. Quinn to have Mr. Keith see Mr. Garnett Monday sorning and find out just what he wants; that if the Senatorial Committee is certifying someone down to ir Garnett for per- jury or if it is in connection with any grand jury: investigation, we, will of course, have to go into it; that Mr. Keith should take it, and then assign an agent to it; thet the Agent should work wder us and not under Mr, Garnett. Mr. Hoover stated that he had been advised that Mr. Brantley is in Washington; that Mr. Brantley should get out right away; that he does not want any delay on the matter in the southwest. Mr. Soover instructed Mr. Quinn to advise Mr. Tamm that Mr. Brantley should understand that this is to be done vigorously and independently with our men; that we do not want to have anything to do with this naa,, er, on the other hand, it should not be spread among the subordinates that Mr. Brantley had orders
