ones Mr. Hoover might want to sign personally.

Mr. Quinn advised Mr. Tolson that thetisnce was quite s success;
that the only trouble was that there was too much of a crowd; that the
Association made approximately one hundred and twenty five or one hundred
and fifty dollars; that there was no excessive drinking and everything
went off fine.
Mr. Tolson instructed Mr. Quinn to check up with Mr. Holtzoff
the matter of pending/bills in order that Mr. Quinn end Mr, Glavin might
ascertain the present status of them; that there is 4 bill to permit the
Bureau to pay the expenses in casefiamage to a car and a bill pertaining
tof{insurance which the Veterans Administration has been working on. Mr.
Quinn advised Mr. Tolson that the Approvriatitm bill as far as he could

Mr. Tolson then jAlzed with Mr. Tamm and inquired if he had
found the letter in thaSChearer case dated March 27, 1929. Mr. Tamm
advised that they hed found @ memorandum prepared by Bardo, who is one
of the officers of the Bethlehem Steel Co.j that this is undoubtedly the
document referred to} that it was written“ in Bardo's handwriting and tells
- of a meeting in a hotel room and states that Shearer threatened to kil.
fakefield (7); that this memorendum appéared to have been given to Mr.
Whitley. Mr. Tolson then inquired about the letter which was referred
to in the Washington Post article, dated March 27, 19295 which Shearer
is supposed to have sent to Homer L.#Ferguson, President of thefiiewport
Nezs Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. Mr. Tamm stated that they had not /
found this letter; that the only thing about the killing is the memorandum
by|Bardo] Mr. Tolson stated that the killing was only one angle to the
matter; that the letter is supposed to contain a list of the fourteen{Senators
including the nine specifically mentioned as being opposed to the bill and ~
are recorded as having past affiliations with the Commmist party. Mr. Tamm
stated that he would recheck this himself, personelly today. Mr. Tolson
stated that the article mentioned was/Tthe Washington Post of Saturday on Page
3, that the letter mentioned in this article aprears to be the principal
thing involved; that if the letter cannot be found it would possibly be
a good thing to be able to state that no such letter appears in the files
of the Department; that he is supposed to have produced the letter before
the Comittee. Mr. Tolson stated that he might call in later, but Mr. Tamm
stated he vould call iir. Tolson after going through the file.
