Mr. Tamm advised Mr. Hoover that the Washington papers were carrying
statements to the effect that certain suspects who were questioned by the
ID fir : y Department in Chicago in one of thagraids, had furnished informatica
as to the Whereabouta of Alvinfkerpis, but that Mr. Connelley had stated
, that this statement was entirely unfounded, and in his opinion was just an
attempt to make headlines. Mr. Tam: stated -that he had also learned from
Mr. Connelley that so far none of the Bureau's informants had been picked
up in any raids. Mr. Hawer instructed Mr. Tamm to watch this situation very
closely. ¥ Oo
Mr. Hoover stated that he had sent to ama g memorandum conserning ~~
} e matter of a post office inspecter covering Mei f and thet he would like’
have Mr. Tamm send him a memorandum concerning this tomorrow; that Mr. Tam
should prepare a semorandum to the Attorney General concerning this with a-
7 copy of Mr. Stanley, reviewing the past difficulties and what Mr. Keenan
is supposed to have arranged and then describe the recent situation, pointing
LZ out that the Bureau cannot work under such circumstances and inquire of the ».
f Attorney General if it would possible to have the matter settled for once
7 and for all to remove such obstacles; and that Mr. Tamm should read this

Mr. Tagm advised that Mr. Brantley is leaving at 6300 PM tonight; that
he has gone over the situation very carefully within and advised him of the
-— Director's wishes, particularly with reference to keeping close mouthed about
the whole matter.
? li. Hoover instructed Mr. Tamm to telephone Mr. Ladd at Chicago and
& ‘/ have them advise Mr. Nathan to call ir. Hoover at New York after Mr. Nathan
has completed his investigation in Chicago and advise Mr. Hoover of the

t Kansas City office relative to the sig patrol, being formed in Kansas and

Me. Tamm also advised Mr. Hoover of the information received from
Mr. Ladd that the Treasury Departaent had a man in Chicago whose sole job
is to contact newspaper men and stir uptpublicity regarding the work of the
x Treasury Department. Mr. Hoover stated that judging from the stories he had
read that the Treasury Department is apparently doing the same thing all over
the camtry and are coordinating their activity in regard to publicity.
