that he thinks that FLATO gave JANE information prior to
the time that SOBLE knew JANE.
SOBLE stated that JANE told him that FLATO
worked for the US Government but he could not recall
exactly what branch, SOBLE viewed a photograph of FLATO
and stated the individual was unknown to him, SOBLE stated
that he never met FLATO but heard JANE speak about him
and a friend of FLATO's or JANE's, named LEO SCHLESSINGER.
SOBLE stated that he does not think that JANE ever mentioned
what SCHLESSINGER did and did not know if he was a Communist
or if he had ever worked for the Soviets. SOBLE states that
he recalls that STERNS had mentioned that they knew both
BILL and EARL BROWDER. SOBLE related that JANE mentioned
that she knew a BROWDER but did not recall what BROWDER it
was. SOBLE related that in the summer or fall of he thinks
1945, he spent three or four days at the STERNS' home at
Ridgefield, Conn. SOBLE relates that on this trip to
Ridgefield he took with him to Ridgefield his typewriter.
SOBLE related he did this because he was at that time
attending typing school and wanted to improve his skill.
SOBLE related that at first ALFRED and
MARTHA made fun cf him for this but later ALFRED became
quite interested. SOBLE stated on return NYC ALFRED went
with SOBLE and enrolled in the same typing school. SOBLE
stated that this school was located in Times Square.
SOBLE stated that ALFRED attended this school with him for
three or four days, found it very difficult, and finally
quit. SOBLE stated that during his stay in Ridgefield at
¢hat time he recalls meeting STERN's butler whose name SOBLE
recalled as RALPH SCOTT, SOBLE related that he did not
know of any relationship that exhisted between SCOTT and
MARTHA STERN, SOBLE also stated.:that during his visit a
representative of the library of Congress visited the STERN
home in relation to papers that MARTHA had of her father,
Ambassador DODD, SOBLE related he was introduced to this
man and recalls his name as THOMAS MARTIN, SOBLE advised that
he thinks this visit by MARTIN to. Ridgefield was unexpected,
