not plan to furnish any information in his possession to representatives of
ALGER HISS. He was specifically and fully advised ab this point that any
such action was entirely on his owm initiative and that he must understand
that no recommendation or instructions concerning any such action were being
piven him by the FEI.
CAROW was again contacted on December 15, 1950 in response to a
request by him and at which time he advised that he had been contacted agein
by KENNGTH SIMON and requested to review Woodstock Typewriter records for
information pertinent to the typewriter involved in the case. SIMON furnished
CAROW with a serial number, N+230099, and requested that sales records for
this typewriter be obtained, CAROW advised at this time that he had spent
two evenings during the previous week looking for records pertaining to
this typewriter but without suecess. CAROW was again contacted by an Agent
of the Philadelphia office on December 25, 1950, at which time he advised
he had no additional inforsiation of value and repeated that he would not
search any of his records for HISS. He was again advised, of course, that
this was a matter of his own decision. The above information was set forth
in Fhiledelphia tel to the Bureau and New York dated December 16, 1950.
With specific rezard to the request in New York tel dated February 4,
1952 that advice be given as to the nature of the records in the possession
of CAG! and the nature of those examined in connection with the Wood=tock
typewriter, it is desired to point out that all records in CAnGJ'S possession
were of a stricbly personal nature and dealt in a very limited way with sales
and repairs handled by the Philadelphia agency of the Voodstock Typewriter
Company. CAROW turned over all of these records to the Philadelphia office
and subsequent to a review of the records, they were returned to him, He
has now advised that these records have been destroyed. The records turned
over by him were very carcfully examined for a typewriter bearing the specific
serial number, 230099. It should be also pointed out that representatives of
AIGsR WISS have requested CANRCY to check his records for the same serial
number,
Recontact has been made at thel—S—sidn ac~ BID
cordance with instructions in hew York tel dated February 4, and the recerds
of that bank are currently beins examined. it is expected that the results
of this examination will be furnished to the New York office by February é,
1952, at the latest.
