The Bureau has been advised by Bryant 0.
Pearce, an inmate of Atlanta Penitentiary, Atlanta,
Georgia, that while he was at United States North-
eastern Penitentiary, Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, period
not given, he was acquainted and associated with Alger
Hiss. According to Fearce, whose reliability is
questionable, Hiss is in the process of writing @
book, portions of which have been smuggled out of the
Lewisburg Penitentiary, which Pearce has read. These
portions reportedly are critical of the Bureau.
Tt ts requested that you ascertain whether
Hiss is actually writing @ book and, tf so, whether
any coptes of those portions GQlready prepared Gre avail-
able. In the event such is the case, you should obtain
copies and forward one each to the Bureau and the New
York Office.
