TolnrHReY, warden, U.S. Penitentiary, iewisburg, Pa., advised on 12/11/53, that AlGuh HISS has not beon given authority to write a book or any part of a book while confined at the institution. He stated he has not received any information that HISS is writing; a book and that periodic “shakedowns" of his quarters have failed to revual any ovidonce that HISS is writing a book. Mv. HUPHPEY advised that in Lay, 1951, AIGHR HISS requested that he be permitted to make notes and drafts rolating to his case as well as on the subject of foreign affairs, ‘these rotes were to be written and maintained in the form of a diary. Nr. HUMPHREY advised that hs inter- viewed HISS, and this matter was discussed. His roquest was denied since it would not conform to good policy. tir. HURPHREY advised that in his opinion the only way that HIS> could smugsle any portions of a book out of the institution would be with the assistance of an officer, and the possibility of this would bo very remote.
