Abe Fortas
Robert F. Kennedy, United States Senator from
Mew York, stated he has no personal knowledge of Mr. Fortas
and has met him on only one or two occasions. He advised that,
to his knowledge, Mr. Fortas is a reputable attorney and said
he bas heard nothing of an unfavorable nature concerning hin.
Senator Kennedy stated he is unable to furnish any additional
information regarding Mr. Fortas or offer a "concrete or
positive” recommendation concerning hin.
Bourke B. Hickenlooper, United States Senator froa
Iowa, advised he bas met Mr. Fortas on two or three occasions,
but said he has not had sufficient contact with Mr. Fortas to
develop a firm opinion of him. Senator Hickenlooper stated he
does not feel qualified to make any recommendation regarding
Mr. Fortas.
Norris Cotton, United States Senator from
Mew Hampshire, advised he has heard that Mr. Fortas is an
outstanding attorney. Senator Cotton said he has had no
personal ageociation with Mr. Fortas and, therefore, is unable
to make any further comments concerning him.
Paul H. Douglas, United States Senator from Illinois,
advised he has heard of Mr. Fortas through the years, and he
deacribed Mr. Fortas by reputation as “an extremely able fellow."
He stated he has heard nothing of an unfavorable nature
concerning Er. Fortas' character, associates, reputation or
loyalty. Senator Douglas advised he does not feel qualified to
make any further comments regarding Mr. Fortas due to his lack
of personal knowledge of Mr. Fortas.
Everett M. Dirksen, United States Senator from
Illinois, advised he has had no close personal contact with
Mr. Fortas. He said he knows very little about Mr. Fortas,
except for the fact he enjoys an excellent reputation as far
as his legal knowledge and ability are concerned. Senator Dirkeen
stated he has received no unfavorable information concerning
Mr. Fortas' character, associates, reputation or loyalty. He
