Abe Fortas Roman L. Hruska, United States Senator from Nebraska, advised he bas known Mr. Fortas on a professional basis for approximately ten years and considers hin one of the top attorneys and Presidential, Congressional and judicial advisers in the Washington, D. C., area. He stated he has had some social contact with Mr. Fortas and regards him as an individual of excellent character and reputation and a loyal American. Senator Zruska said he has heard nothing of a derogatory nature concerning My. Fortas and stated he would recommend hima for any position of trust and confidence. Howard W. Cannon, United States Senator fron Nevada, advised he has known Mr. Fortas for six or eight years. He said his relationship with Mr. Fortas has been mainyy profes- sional and stated My. Portas has a very good reputation and is highly regarded by members of Congress. Senator Cannon advised he considers Mr. Fortas a very capable person and said he has heard nothing of a derogatory nature concerning him. He said he considers Mr. Fortas a loyal American of excellent character and advised he would not hesitate to recommend him for a posi- tion of trust and confidence. George L. Murphy, United States Senator from California, advised he has known of Mr. Portas for approximately 25 years and has been acquainted with him on a professional basis for approximately 15 years. Senator Murphy stated he has had limited contact with Mr. Fortas and knows he haa been an adviger to Presidents of the United States since the adminis- tration of the late President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He said he possesses no information of a derogatory nature concerning Mr. Fortas and stated he would recommend him for a position of trust and confidence. Edward M. Kennedy, United States Senator from Massachusetts, advised he hag heard of Mr. Fortas, but does not know him personally. Senator Kennedy stated he possesses no information regarding Mr, Fortas and, therefore, could make po statement concerning hin. Michael J. Mansfield, United States Senator fron Montana, advised he has known Mr. Fortas for over 20 years, primarily on & professional basis. He stated Mr. Fortas enjoys an excellent reputation and is highly regarded in the field of
