SF 7-855 la DAG/2b . ; directions by Female Number 1. BENENSON had the impression they may have changed - drivers on at least one occasion. He overheard them discussing a telephone number. One asked what a certain telephone number was and another replied, "The first three digits are the same as yours. The others are ....." _ (This BENENSON could not recall exactly, but when the telephone “ number of STEVEN WEED, 848-7287 was read to him, BENENSON said this . sounds like that sequence of numbers. BENENSON is certain he heard both male and female voices in the car, tut is not certain whether any of these belonged to a Negro. They threatened him occasionally, saying once, “If he moves, slit his throat." They also mentioned "sticking a knife in his ribs", and BENENSON heard the term "potato masher" used at least once. ' Judging from the conversation of those in the car, BENENSON said he felt they were reasonably well-educated inasmuch as they did not use bad grammar. Most of their conversation was very cryptic as though they had previously arranged a code. BENENSON further recalled that at one point in the car someone said, "Get some identification from him in case he blabs too mich." He said they patted him down, but did not locate his wallet (which he had on him) or take anything which would identify him to them, so far as he inows. After what seemed to be about 20 minutes of driving, the car came to a stop and the case was removed from atop of him. The people got out of the car, but BENENSON had the feeling that one of the girls remained in the car with him. The engine was kept running. Shortly thereafter he heard a female scream, "Please! Please!" Some shots were fired. BENENSON believes he heard one burst of automatic gunfire, followed by some single shots. _ The car door opened and three persons jumped in on top of --him in the back seat. BENENSON said he felt there were _more people in the car at this time than there were before the shooting.
