“not even under bond. There were 12 men on this board
who took care of this money. There were no other out-
standing Special assessments outside of the regular
dues and assessments for death etc. I know that dur-
ing 1932 and 1937 a lot of the members were able to get gas covpons from
the loc2l if they had to do something on union business and a lot used to
get such gas. .
"The officers and other expenses and salaries ail came out of the
general fund of local 54. The de2th fund was handled 0.K. as far as I
know. If there was any crookedness with the money affairs it could have
happened in the 10% levy but I don't know for sure if anything wrong did go
on there. The local e xpenses were all read off at the meetings. The PHA
officials however_ did make regular reports to the miners at the meetings
as to what happened tc their loc2l funds. However, this 10% levy was not
accounted for as it was as ecial set up. When the Special strike fund was
discontinued by loc]l 5. (RAs * left his job and moved to Michigan.

While we had our Progressive union at Mine B, there were rumors
around that there were UMW men out trying to get the PLA to go back to the
UM; but none of them ever approached me. During this period there was no
picketing at Mine B by the UMY that I know of, I did see some white papers
scattered along the lane leading up to the mine once but whether this was
UM? literature or not I could not say. I kmew nothing sbout any paid UMW
Spies or organizers being in the PMA local prior to the strike.

"I remember when the contract between the Progressives and the
operitors ran out in Mar. of 1937, at that time a temporary tgreement
was drawn up as I recall and white slips with the substence of this agreement
on them were poseed around among the men, by ig There was no feeling
at this time thet the Progressives would not be able to getas good a con-
tract as good as the UMY or anyone else, I remember no argunents or disputes L
over this. There WAS Never any tr suble at the mine over the Wwegze que stion -
so far as I know. I never had Falsetti or Elshoff say anything to me about
the agreement between the union and the company, I believe that the
company did have some slips showing the nature of the agreement, bot T Gont
know exactly what the nature of this was at this time.
