Agent was instructed by Special Agent Guinan to retire at approz-
imately 5:00 p.m., in order that he might be in @ position to take up the post
at the service door in the kitchan at 12:00 midnight. Mrs. Rogers wma to
Observe the hal} through the service door from 8:00 p.m., until midnight. It
_ Was approximately 6:15 p.m., as before atated, when agent was called from the
bedroom by Special Agent Guinan. °
Imnsdiately upon the receipt in 207 of the call indicating that
MILLER might be leaving in the Auburn automobile, Agent Guinan instructed
Special Agent W. A. Smith to go domoetaira and get the gun squads in position
eround the hotel. I did not hear Mr. Guinan give these instructions to agent
Smith but waa later so informed by both agenta. These gun squads had
previously been removed to some distance from the hotel ao that their presence
in the immediate neighborhood would not give the fugitive or his consorts
notice that the place was under surveillance. Approximately five minutes
after Agent Suith left for the gun squads, saceording to agent Guinan, VIVIAN
MATTSERS came out of the door of 211, closely followed by the man believed
to be VERNON MILLER. .The man was walking very fast, had a enap-brimned
browm hat dram don over his eyes, large horn-rinmsd glasses, and e heavy
- brow mustache.
It my de noted that there are three lights in the corridor in the |
hall in question and agent was unable to identify MILLER until he had arrived
almost at the third light in the hall which is epproximtely tveive feet from
the service door at which agent was watching. At thie point, INLLER ws wilk-
ing so fast that he was approximately three steps in front of VIVIAN MATTHEWS;
and as he reached the light, he became alarmed, apparently at noise iasuing
from the door in apartment 207, and started to rum. Agont immediately ran
out from the kitchen into the living room and advised Agent Guinan that the
man was MILLER. Even if I bad been armed at the service door, which I was
not, having been placed there by Special Agent Guinan only for purposes of
identification, I could not have shot MILEZR from the service door inaamuch
ee MILLER was running and less than a second elepsed between identification
and disappearance from sight. Immediately after advising agent Guinan that |
the man wa MILLER and the exit from 207 of agents and police officers, agent
followed out into the hall and observed Agents Yen Waggoner end Guinan in the
eorridor where thay had apprehended VIVIAN MATTHSRS who bed run beck almost .
to the door of 211. It ia understood that other egerts, headed by Sergeant
FPrenmuth of the Chicago Detective Bureau, had gone dow the etairs following
MILLER. The above information wae given me by Agent Nichole.
