ae headquarters talked at some length explaining the problems of

pee eligible men between 18 and 37 years of age included twenty-two .

and four mtllton men of the reservotr were engaged tn agricultural

it could be antictpated that all the rest of the reservotr would ..
be in the armed services by the end of 1943. He pointed out this
would include members of police departments and he encouraged the
police departments accordingly to begin to obtain personnel
immedtately outstde the age groups of 18 to 37. In the course of
his remarks he unfortunately used the words*bartenders”and “race
track booktes"and imnedtately upon hts closing comments Edward
J. Kélly of the Rhode Island State Police leaped to hte feet and
with a great show of force and resentment defended the poltce of
the country from the tnference which he asserted Colonel Baker |
had made that they were all bartenders and race track booktea. ~-
